Conference hosted by the Junior Professorship for Ethics of Digital Methods and Technologies at the Ruhr-University Bochum <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz ist heute weitl\u00e4ufig pr\u00e4sent, in vielen F\u00e4llen auch ohne dass es uns bewusst ist. KI-gest\u00fctzte Softwarel\u00f6sungen pr\u00e4gen unsere Internetrecherchen, erledigen Aufgaben in Alltag, Forschung und im kommerziellen Bereich, unterst\u00fctzen Bildung, erm\u00f6glichen Barrierefreiheit und bieten Kommunikationsschnittstellen in der Nachbildung zwischenmenschlicher Interaktion. Zugleich sammeln diese Technologien Wissen \u00fcber uns, greifen in unsere Handlungsm\u00f6glichkeiten ein, formen unsere Identit\u00e4t, pr\u00e4gen unsere Wahrnehmung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gerade die Philosophie kann durch ihre besonderen Perspektiven und ihre Methoden Wege aufzeigen, diese Risiken vor dem Hintergrund allgegenw\u00e4rtiger Techniknutzung zu reflektieren. Aus ethischer Perspektive werden Risiken unter Stichworten wie Autonomie, Privatsph\u00e4re und Vertrauensw\u00fcrdigkeit beleuchtet und k\u00f6nnen in Kodizes zur Anwendung von KI \u00fcberf\u00fchrt werden. Damit verwoben sind erkenntnistheoretische, anthropologische und technikhistorische Fragestellungen, die die kritische Betrachtung von K\u00fcnstlicher Intelligenz um weitere Aspekte bereichern. Der Workshop m\u00f6chte mit einem gr\u00fcndlichen Blick auf Kontexte und Konzepte die Reichweite dieser ethischen und technikphilosophischen Perspektiven anhand verschiedener Anwendungsf\u00e4lle von K\u00fcnstlicher Intelligenz ausloten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A German language meeting report by Philipp Zimmermann, Sarah Becker and Isabel Wrobel has been published by the Journal for Technology Assessment in Theory and Practice (TATuP) here (open access)<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Conference Programme<\/a> | Conference Website<\/a> | Meeting report (German, TATuP)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n FRIAS Junior Researcher Conference, Freiburg<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Issues of surveillance and control have been tremendously present in the media’s headlines in the past decade and many examples can be named: The debate about the deployment of body scanners at airports raised strong objections to what some people considered a \u201cvirtual strip search\u201d; the continued legal and political battle over communications data retention across Europe once again reignited after the Paris terrorist attacks in 2015; the revelation of a vast network of surveillance programmes conducted by the NSA resulted a continued debate about governmental overreach and the existence of a digital surveillance state. All these examples unveil two recurring and related features of security-orientated surveillance and control: the pervasive use of technologies able to collect personal information and the preventative, intelligence-led approach to public and national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both in and outside academia, the current debate consequently features questions mostly framed in terms of a privacy versus security dilemma or a trade-off model: in order to achieve (more) security, we have to sacrifice (a quantum of) privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, it is patent that the impact of large-scale surveillance measures goes far beyond security and privacy matters. On the one hand, techniques of surveillance and control are indispensable tools for exercising and generating power and for establishing social order. On the other hand, the negative effects can reach as far as threatening the very fabric of social and democratic life. This can happen, for example, by \u201cchilling\u201d the societal climate to a point where citizens refrain from taking legitimate actions in fear of negative repercussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although such aspects of surveillance and control are widely known, we are still missing a theoretical framework to fully understand their meaning and consequences. The workshop aims at bringing together leading experts and young researchers in order to discuss the implications of practices of surveillance and control for contemporary societies. We strive to identify the most promising philosophical paths to developing theoretical tools that will allow us to better understand those challenges, which are likely to shape much of the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Conference Programme<\/a> | Conference Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n PhD-Symposium at the\u00a0Centre for Security and Society, Freiburg<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sicherheitstechnologien transformieren in zunehmendem Ma\u00dfe das Leben in unserer Gesellschaft. Die Folgen des Einsatzes von Sicherheitstechnologien f\u00fcr Individuum und \u00d6ffentlichkeit sind jedoch ambivalent zu bewerten. So verspricht etwa die automatische Auswertung digitaler Spuren in sozialen Netzwerken einerseits gr\u00f6\u00dferen Schutz (z.B. vor Amokl\u00e4ufern), andererseits k\u00f6nnen derartige Ma\u00dfnahmen schnell selbst zur Bedrohung f\u00fcr grundlegende gesellschaftliche Werte werden (z.B. f\u00fcr den Schutz der Privatsph\u00e4re) und das Fundament der offenen Gesellschaft schleichend aush\u00f6hlen. Diese Bedenken k\u00f6nnen zum Teil zwar durch weitere rein technische Ma\u00dfnahmen ausger\u00e4umt werden. Letztlich m\u00fcssen derartige Ans\u00e4tze jedoch fr\u00fchzeitig in einem l\u00f6sungsorientierten Dialog zwischen Sicherheitstechnikern und Sicherheitsethikern reflektiert werden, dessen Ziel der Erhalt der offenen Gesellschaft ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Im Rahmen des Symposiums werden Doktorandinnen und Doktroanden aus den vielf\u00e4ltigen Disziplinen der Sicherheitsforschung ihre Forschungsprojekte und Ans\u00e4tze pr\u00e4sentieren und zur Diskussion stellen.<\/p>\n\n\n\nScientific coordinators:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
